October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month!

Domestic violence (DV), also called Intimate Partner Violence, harms the victim who is hurt directly, as well as the family. Children who witness domestic violence are likely to have emotional consequences which have a lasting impact on their health and well-being. What do you know about domestic violence?

The Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence (MNADV) has a wealth of information on the subject. Click here Facts About Domestic Violence for an excellent explanation of what Domestic Violence is, effects on victims and dynamics of abusive relationships.

Did you know that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month? Everyone can do something to make a difference in ending Domestic Violence. Most communities have domestic violence services available to individuals who have been harmed by a partner, whether physically or emotionally. These programs often need volunteers to help out, by doing something like painting a children's playroom in the safe shelter or donating needed items such as diapers, grocery gift cards and clothing for employment interviews.  Holding a fundraiser or donating directly to a program working to end domestic violence is another great way to help end this crime, which can affect any of us.

Do you know where to direct someone in your community who needs domestic violence-related services? Clicking on this Link to state coalitions brings up a list of links to each state's domestic violence coalitions, where anyone can find their local DV program information.

Today I am adding my voice to the No More Campaign, to take a stand against gender-based violence. To learn more about the No More Campaign, please view this short video: No More Campaign PSA .

What can you do to make a difference?
